Travelling to Whitby By Car


Travelling to Whitby from the North

If travelling by car from the north of the country, then the A171 from Middlesbrough via Guisborough, leads over the moors past Lockwood Beck and Scaling Dam Resevoir (nearby petrol station). On a clear day there are magnificent views over the moors and coast. On the approach to Whitby, there are panoramic views of the Abbey Headland.

Travelling to Whitby from the South

Travelling by car from the south of the country, via Scarborough, the A171 runs to Whitby over the moors via Burniston, and Cloughton, past the Flask Inn (nearby petrol station), through Hawsker, and then access into the town is by either the New Bridge or the Swing Bridge.


From the M1, take the A64 in the direction of York. Keeping on the A64, travel to Malton, then take the A169 over the North Yorkshire Moors via Pickering (petrol station), passing through Sleights . This road will lead to a roundabout, turn right onto the A171 and into Whitby.



Travelling to Whitby by Bus

Arriva Buses run south into Whitby Bus Station, from Durham, Newcastle, Middlesbrough, Guisborough, Loftus and Sleights.


Buses run north from Scarborough, either directly over the North Yorkshire Moors or via Robin Hoods Bay.

The Coastliner Coaches reach Whitby via Malton, York, Tadcaster and Leeds.

Travelling to Whitby by Train

Whitby can be reached by the Esk Valley Railway Line from Middlesbrough. This is a very scenic route along the Esk Valley, calling in at picturesque moorland villages. Middlesbrough and Darlington are major stations accessed by many parts of the country.

York Railway Station has a link to Scarborough Railway Station, but unfortunately there is no rail link from here to Whitby.
